First let me say thanks for being here. Today I'll be focusing on a specific application method using our most popular product, COOL! This particular method is referred to as a "knockdown" which results in a beautifully random decorative texture. Applying a knockdown coating isn't typically something for the novice, everyday homeowner to take on - therefore this is often a project that requires a skilled applicator to some extent. However, no matter which one you may be, feel free to read on and learn more about COOL! and why it's quickly becoming the go-to product for many contractors and "weekend warriors" alike! I'm about to dive into what a "knockdown" coating is, how it's applied, a brief history, and how COOL! is raising the bar in versatility, creativity, ease-of-use, and all around user-experience. *Contractors: bare with me, for I will be speaking to both you, and the homeowner. You, of course, already know what a knockdown is, but I'll try to briefly educate your clientele also. Lastly, I'll touch on why COOL! is the most time efficient and attractive option for your business.

First of all, the picture in the article header (and the one here) will tell you what a "knockdown" texture looks like. Chances are you've never seen one exactly like these, but try to ignore the neat color schemes for now, I'll get to that later. These two examples were done using our product, COOL!.

This texture is seen far and wide, more than likely you've seen it at a resort, or perhaps you have it on your own pool at home. It's applied using a special spraying apparatus that the industry refers to as a "hopper gun". This tool is powered by an air compressor that delivers low pressure to propel a thick, cement-like product onto the concrete . Shortly after it lands onto the slab from the gun, a trowel-like tool is dragged across the wet product to literally, "knock it down", resulting in the ever-so- popular "knockdown" texture.

This method of application is nothing new, it was introduced as a pool deck coating in the 1960's! Since then, it has essentially become the standard application for most commercial pool settings and fairly prolific throughout the residential pools as well. They are great products to have (when installed correctly) and most can provide a comfortable walking surface for bare feet on those hot summer days. These toppings are almost always installed shortly after the concrete is poured around a newly built pool, simply because most of them require "green", freshly poured concrete. This is significant and I'll circle back to this shortly.

Since the 1960's many of these products have come and gone, several are still around, but an industry that started off as a single product quickly became a fairly saturated market with slightly different variations of the original. Although there have been dozens of manufacturers to offer these products over the last 5 to 6 decades, one thing has remained the same...

They all "walk like a duck, quack like a duck..." as they say. These products of course have slight differences in application , for example, one might require a primer before application. Other systems may have pigment mixed throughout the entire mix vs. another which utilizes a neutral-colored "scratch" coat (or base coat) that is later painted or stained for desired color. Nonetheless, the final result is always a monotone , "up n' down" , "valley and crevice" , good ole' knockdown texture, seen here (specific product pictured above is unknown, it is not COOL!). They are limited in color choices, warranties, and are frequently a strenuous job even for the skilled professional.

What I'm trying to say is that these products are all very similar in what they offer, how long they perform, application protocols, and even (especially) formulation! There has been minimal innovation in the knockdown pool deck coating industry since their debut over 50 years ago.

Contractors, hang in there! We're getting to the good part.

Here's a nice picture of COOL! applied in a custom two-tone knockdown.

I spend a lot of time on the phone with homeowners in need of a pool deck remodel. I explain to them that our system includes a very effective preparation product that cleans and prepares the existing deck surface for the COOL! coating. It's so effective and easy to use, it minimizes the risks involved with applying any coating or paint product to an ill-prepared substrate. Contractors know this is simply "paint and coatings 101." Having a clean and solid surface to coat is paramount to a successful application that lasts!

Many of the homeowners I speak to end up doing the project themselves, after all, the standard or "easiest" way to apply our product is to simply roll 2 coats onto your pool deck using standard paint tools. Top it all off with a couple coats of our clear sealer (SealBack) and you're left with a durable, consistent non-slip finish in ANY color of your choice(monotone), it doesn't get hot, and you get the best warranty around.

**This is also a great option for re-surfacing existing knockdown pool deck toppings! Logically speaking, it's the only option one should consider (granted the current topping is structurally sound and not de-laminating everywhere) because COOL! is the only product capable of retaining the thermal properties of the existing knockdown topping! In other words, resurfacing with ordinary paint or stain will only result in a hot, sometimes slippery surface that simply won't last. The only other option is to install a brand new knockdown coating, which almost always requires a full demolition of the existing knockdown topping using grinders, scarifying machinery, etc. This is extremely messy , labor intensive, and EXPENSIVE for the pool owner! These two options are both very painful, as the cheaper option sacrifices comfort for improved, but short-lived aesthetics - and the other is simply so outrageously expensive that you almost need to be a professional athlete to afford it... COOL! SOLVES THIS DILEMMA by providing a resurfacing option that stays cool, safe, lasts for years, in any color you desire.

So, let's break it down:

1.) COOL! can be applied with standard paint equipment to achieve a uniform , monotone non-slip texture on bare concrete and/or existing pool deck toppings including old, tired knockdowns. It's so user friendly that a handy-homeowner can apply. When resurfacing existing knockdown toppings, the current decorative texture is not lost, it will telescope through the newly applied COOL! , which is nice.

2.) COOL! can also be applied via hopper gun for a beautiful two tone knockdown texture on new or existing concrete. (Most other knockdown products require freshly poured concrete).

3.) COOL! can be tinted to ANY color under the sun by adding one gallon of exterior acrylic paint (no primer) to the ingredients found in the 5 gallon COOL bucket. Yes, this is a mandatory step for tinting and activation of the product.

4.) Since COOL! is tinted by a gallon of paint that YOU choose at your local paint store, you have infinite choices as far as what colors you want around your pool. Be creative as you please.

5.) Unlimited color choices combined with knockdown-application capability results in the first ever "custom two-tone knockdown coating". Imagine the millions of color combinations you could choose from!

Here's a small gallery of COOL! applied in various custom two-tone "knockdowns".

Essentially what Encore Coatings has created with the COOL! system is a single product that can provide a solution for virtually any pool deck scenario, new or existing, in any color (or color combination for knockdowns) one could ever imagine. It also has a non-slip texture that is ADA-compliant. All of the above comes at a very affordable cost for both homeowners and tradesmen.

Our product when applied in a knockdown finish is "thinner" than some others you may have seen. It will not be so vulnerable to abrasions and dirt accumulation. It's easy to clean, and extremely durable. It has a Lifetime Residential Warranty and a 10-Year Commercial Warranty .

Contractors: so you know, the base coat (always the darker color) is ROLLED on, then an hour later you can fill up the hopper gun with your secondary color (always lighter) and begin spraying. Knock it down within 30 seconds. Complete job with SealBack clear sealer. Prep is made easy with our product, Triple Crown, which cleans, etches, and prepares any substrate you'll come across around the pool. This system is super forgiving and extremely time-efficient compared to other products. The backbone of this formula is a supercharged resin system that was formulated to emulate the natural movement of concrete slabs, therefore COOL! will be hanging on for the ride for years to come despite substrate expansion and contraction (as you know, many knockdowns become brittle overtime).

As a contractor, the only thing you have for sale is your time. Spend it wisely with products that can satisfy your customers and allow you to get/complete more jobs! Please message me for more info, I'll be glad to answer your technical questions, perhaps about crack filling and patching procedures, for example.

These 3 products above account for the most comprehensive, versatile, and COOLEST pool deck coating system in over 50 years! (Pictured : COOL! Pool Deck Coating "Bundle" , which includes enough cleaner (prep) , COOL! coating, and clear sealer (last step) for about 175-200 square feet. We've bundled these products to eliminate the guess work for you... i.e: 1,000 sq. feet would require at least 5 bundles.
