PoolPoxi Primer Overview

The PoolPoxi Primer Coating System is an outstanding basecoat and primer for all forms of pool finishes, including gunite, marcite, plaster, and fiberglass.  PoolPoxi Primer even bonds to steel. PoolPoxi Primer is able to strengthen the substrate and protect it from rust and corrosion. It provides maximum bond strength as well as a hydrostatic barrier which cures even in damp environments. There are no unpleasant odors as it is formulated for exceptionally low levels of VOCs.

This fantastic Primer has the ability to inhibits mildew, is easy to apply (thanks to its self-leveling properties), and offers a low impact on the environment. It is non-permeable when cured, and hardens completely within 48 hours at 70 degrees.

SafeResin Technology

PoolPoxi Primer is made with SafeResin technology for a super-charged, safe performance. SafeResin offers the next level of performance in epoxy coatings.   The VOC level in SafeResin, which is used across the PoolPoxi line, is California-compliant and produces minimum odor.  Therefore, whether you’re installing it inside a pool shell or inside a garage, the odor is kept to a minimum.

Properties and Performance

PoolPoxi Primer is a one-of-a-kind primer that creates a durable, watertight primer for your pool’s shell.  This primer system protects your pool’s final finish from hydrostatic loads (water trying to enter from the soil side of the pool), while also creating a primed finish for maximum adhesion. It is applied in the form of a non-drip semi-thick 2-part liquid with a working time of 40 minutes. It fully cures within 48 hours. It is best applied between 50 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, with an ideal application temperature of 70 degrees.

Application Instructions

(The application of PoolPoxi Primer is step 3 in a 4 step process and is applied after the PoolPoxi Repair and Surface Cleaning steps have been performed.)  PoolPoxi Primer is NOT required when resurfacing a fiberglass pool.

Before applying PoolPoxi Primer, ensure that the surface remains clean.

  1. The PoolPoxi Primer Coating System is a 2-part epoxy kit that is mixed on a 1:1 ratio. Using a drill, mix thoroughly until the entire liquid takes on a uniform texture, color and consistency. Once mixed, the epoxy has a potlife of up to 20 minutes at 70 degrees Fahrenheit in the mixing container.  It has a working time of 40 minutes.
  1. Note that higher temperatures reduce curing time, and mixing larger quantities than 3 gallons will generate internal heat that will shorten potlife.
  1. Apply the PoolPoxi Primer by pouring material in a line approximately two to three feet away from the starting area to be coated. Using a 3/8″ nap roller that is lint free, spread the material evenly across the surface. Edges and corners can be filled and cut in using a brush.
  1. If the material is spread in a thinner manner, worklife is extended by 15-20 minutes. Never apply outside the recommended range of temperatures (minimum 50 degrees Fahrenheit). Once applied, at the temperature of 70 degrees, the liquid will gel within 40 minutes and crystallize in about 4 hours, and will cure completely within 24 to 48 hours, depending on specific environmental factors.
  1. To clean tools and spills, use simple denatured alcohol.
